wondering what everyone is doing re: mobile phones on tour.
I have an iPhone which I certainly will not be taking and risking having stolen, so I was thinking of taking over my sh*tty old Nokia phone and buying a UK prepaid simcard (which will work all through europe) to send & receive text messages.
Apparently global roaming kills you because you can still receive calls and basically you pay each time you answer the phone or someone leaves you a voicemail.
what is everyone else doing?

Be very careful using global roaming! Def get the phone company to block in coming calls and your message bank while you are away. They charge you for when people call and leave messages if you dont.
I also had mine only set up for text messages when I went to NZ, but still ended up with a whopping bill! I think the messages cost nearly $1 each! I am going with the UK sim card also, and a phone card!

| | Phones (17th Sep 08 at 7:16pm UTC) | | PS I also had difficulties on two seperate overseas holidays when Optus blocked everything (text and calls) both incoming and outgoing. I had to get someone back in Australia to call them for me to get it sorted, and it still took 2 days!

| | Phones (17th Sep 08 at 8:56pm UTC) | | Thinking of travelling next year and as I'll likely spend a lot of time in the UK I think I'll just get a UK Sim card so there will be reasonable charges when I want to use it. No point using my NZ sim card on global roaming for months. I wouldn't plan on doing any calling but there's always a chance someone will ring you, and the cost of texts home to family/friends would start to build up quickly.
Interested to hear what others have done when going to the UK and on one of these tours. | |

Having my phone is very important to me for so many reasons (calender, alarm clock, emergency calls for whatever reason etc etc) and i need advice on the best option for me to use it overseas.

i also willtake my phone and block calls (on telstra its called a 11/11 barring to stop outgoing and just not answer calls.. thought i would share)
but i would must prefer to be prepared and ask for the right thing.
so any suggestions would be GREAT.

i seen somthing a while back on here, in regards 2 a 'gosim' which as i understand it is a global sim card with resonable rates..
i have only had a quick look but maybe its woth looking into further? has anyone heard of this before?

My plan for the tour was to use my Blackberry for twitter/texts and as a modem for my netbook and use that for keeping in touch via IM and facebook. Voice calls aren't a huge priority. My carrier here in Canada charges obscene rates so I'm not even considering them. | |

Last time I was over in Ireland and the UK I spent heaps of money topping up my prepaid sims. I had to get 2 differnt sims for when I was in each contry. I am going to go with one of the Travel sims.

It allowed me to use my phone all around Europe, was cheap(ish) and as no-one at home knew the new number there was no worries about anyone ringing and it costing a fortune. BUT I always knew I could use it in an emergency. I didn't use it very much, a few texts a day, a couple of short calls. It cost me GBP10 for the card and about another GBP10 in calls/txts for the 42 days I was on tour.
